Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to contribute to KCD if I am already paying tuition?

KCD is a nonprofit independent school, which means that we receive no funding from any government source. Tuition dollars provide our students with an outstanding academic environment and many extracurricular opportunities. Annually, there is approximately a $1.5 million gap between the revenue generated by tuition and the true cost of a KCD education - this equates to over $1500 per student. Annual gifts (i.e. contributions to One Fund) fill this gap and create a margin of excellence at the school. One Fund dollars help provide our students with one of the finest all-around educational programs in the region. For example, recent contributions to the One Fund have allowed us to

  • become a regional leader in integrating cutting-edge technology with the curriculum;
  • make a substantial investment in professional development, allowing our students to benefit from the latest research and innovative teaching strategies;
  • introduce our students to a number of dynamic, nationally-prominent speakers;
  • expand the number of electives available to students and create a prestigious new honors program;
  • make substantial additions to the Lower School’s core curriculum by hiring teachers specializing in technology, foreign language, and the arts.

Finally, making a gift to KCD allows you to provide a direct benefit to your child while receiving a tax deduction for your charitable giving.

Why is every gift important?

A donation of any amount shows that you believe in the value of the education that KCD is providing to your child. Every gift counts. Those considering major gifts often use parent participation statistics when deciding whether or not to give money to KCD. A high level of parent participation shows that parents support the mission of the school.

What is the difference between a capital campaign and the One Fund?

A capital campaign is a periodic fund-raising effort dedicated to major projects such as new construction, renovation, and endowment. Gifts made to a capital campaign are typically paid out over several years. The One Fund is an annual fund-raising effort that is launched each fall. The One Fund supports annual operational and programming needs such as technology, professional development, additional equipment and faculty, and innovative programs. Gifts made to the One Fund are paid in full during the fiscal year (July 1–June 30).

Will I be asked to give to the KCD One Fund and a capital campaign in the same year?

Yes. The KCD One Fund campaign takes place each school year, but capital campaigns take place as major strategic needs arise (for example, the construction of our performing arts center in 2010). Capital campaigns usually entail larger pledges and therefore may be paid over several years.
